Preparation is Key Before Hitting the Sand
Most desert breakdowns in the UAE are caused by preventable issues: incorrect tyre pressure, cooling system failures, lack of recovery equipment, or driver error. Taking a few minutes to inspect your vehicle before leaving the tarmac will dramatically reduce your risk of getting stranded.
1. Deflate Your Tyres
This is the golden rule of sand driving. Standard road tyres must be deflated to 12–15 PSI when entering soft sand. Deflating increases the tyre's footprint, letting you float over the sand instead of digging in. Ensure you have a tyre pressure gauge and a reliable 12V air compressor to reinflate your tyres before returning to paved roads.
2. Check Your Coolant and Radiator
Driving on soft sand puts immense strain on your engine. The low speeds and high revs mean your cooling system works twice as hard. Check your coolant level, inspect the radiator hoses for leaks, and ensure your radiator fan is functioning correctly. If your engine temperature begins to climb while driving on sand, turn off the AC immediately and park facing the wind to cool down.
3. Bring the Right Off-Road Gear
Never enter the desert alone. Always travel with at least one other 4x4 vehicle. Additionally, carry this basic recovery gear:
- Kinetic recovery rope or snatch strap
- Traction boards (sand boards)
- Shovel (for digging out tires)
- Heavy-duty gloves
- Working 12V tyre inflator
What to Do if You Get Stuck in the Desert
If you find yourself stuck, follow these rules to avoid making the situation worse:
- Stop Spinning the Wheels: The moment you lose forward momentum and the wheels spin, stop immediately. Continuing to accelerate will only bury the chassis deeper.
- Clear Sand: Use your shovel to clear sand from the front and back of all four tyres and under the chassis if it has bottomed out.
- Lower Tyre Pressure Further: If you are deflated to 15 PSI, try dropping to 10–12 PSI to gain extra traction. Drive out slowly.
- Use Sand Boards: Place traction boards firmly under the tyres in the direction you plan to exit.
- Share GPS Location: If you cannot extract the vehicle, share your live GPS coordinates via WhatsApp immediately with a professional recovery service.
